Provided general consultation on the department’s strategic objective and direction.

As the Engineering Manager for the Bergquist Company (50th. largest privately held diversified manufacturing company in U.S.A.), he has performed the following assignments:
  • As a member of the senior management team for Touch Screen division, he was responsible for overseeing quality and process engineering, product design and development, production tools and equipment maintenance and procurement, R&D activities around procuring and testing new raw materials and increasing sustainability and performance of new and existing products. Ray’s primary task was to institute a strong in-process quality system to reduce manufacturing defects. He scrutinized the entire manufacturing system including process design, best practices, materials, tools and equipment used, design for manufacturability, drawings and design documents. After analyzing the deficiencies, he formulated numerous improvements which significantly improved product quality.
  • Ray had managed several Six-Sigma initiatives which streamlined production, increased factory throughput from 67% to over 90% monthly average and driven product quality towards zero-defect.
  • Part of his responsibility was to improve the quality of supply-chain system. He performed need based technical analysis for customers and suppliers, which included site visits, organizing detailed technical discussions regarding product design, raw material substitutes, cost and their availabilities. He brought together the engineering team and managed several design projects to accommodate new materials and manufacturing friendly design. He also commissioned build-to-order products which resulted into higher customer satisfaction and retention. By lowering supply-chain cost and launching value-added products and product positioning, he brought the company P&L from significant loss (16%) to break even. He hired consultants and Subject Matter Experts to assist rapid turnaround in projects, strengthened engineering team by hiring and reassigning engineers and members of the technical staff.

As the Program Manager for 3M Touch Systems (has 30% world market share in touch screen technology), Canada, performed the following assignments:
  • Managed several high impact technical programs from concept to scale-up through DMAIC roadmap. Program budget ranging from $50K to $1 million, spanning from 6 to 108 weeks. Some of such technical programs included investigating and designing invisible circuit pattern generation techniques on conductive optics used for touch screen construction. He also managed facility projects involving designing and custom building tools and equipment.
  • Led a cross-functional team to reduce defective product return rate from 45% to 5% by re-engineering a product packaging solution. As touch screens are fragile, conventional packaging resulted into significant damage during transportation and higher rate of field failure. This project addressed the need for designing robust product packaging and validating the robustness by conducting transportation test as outlined in the ISTA standard.
  • Participated in cost savings mandate by championing programs resulting in $60K savings per month. Managed a project which addressed the need for cost effective manufacturing. Ray, supported by a team of engineers, investigated digital ink with variable electrical conductivity technology which automated the otherwise labour intensive manual operation. Scope of the assignment included performing cost analysis, ROI, outsourcing the operation, negotiating pricing, implementing supply-chain process for the raw materials and finished goods.
  • Investigated and presented business cases to Senior Management Team chaired by the General Manager for new product and process development opportunities.

As the Senior Process/Quality Engineer for Ballard Power Systems Inc.( A manufacturer of fuel cells, fuel cell engines and electric drive systems), Canada, performed the following assignments:
  • Supervised a team of engineers and consultants to design the manufacturing process and created product assembly manual and released to production for the 250KW FC power plants. Optimized manufacturing and assembly of the same by measuring and analyzing production cycle time. Beta released prototypes and solicited field trial feedback to further design improvement.
  • Managed regulatory (ISO, TUV, UL and CSA) compliancy programs.
  • Evaluated and qualified vendors based on standard of manufacturing capability, best practices and quality system.
  • Conducted cost engineering and vendor negotiation, reduced overall production cost by 15.8%.
  • Championed the entire manufacturing program for 1KW portable generators from design, pilot to scale up.
  • Managed a project involving a proprietary plug-in software development through SDLC methodology. The software bridged the gap between the engineering design documentation application called Agile® with the MRP-II application called Fourth Shift®. The software development was partly outsourced and spanned for 87 weeks.

As the Senior Manufacturing Engineer for Caere Corporation (A manufacturer of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software and scanners), U.S.A., managed the following assignments:
  • Implemented DFMA and saved $65K per year by reducing full time manufacturing support.
  • Managed and budgeted pilot programs for new products (estimated value of $120K per project).
  • Outsourced test tools to contract engineering firms saving $50K per year.
  • Chaired CCB, ECO and Material Release and Planning system implementation board, a $155K per year business interest.
  • Provided training for production team on product testing, integration, lean manufacturing and manufacturing process flow.

As the Team Leader/Manufacturing Engineer for Applied Materials Inc. (World’s largest semiconductor equipment manufacturer), U.S.A., managed the following assignments:
  • Managed $1 million engineering project and delivered technical presentations to senior executives. The project involved designing and building equipment for final testing Applied’s DPS Centura Platform®. The equipment included robotics, all related controllers, motion and gas sensors, SCADA, mechanical platforms, control chambers, HVAC, High Voltage power distributors and associated software designing.
